Dr.A.Velumani was born in April 1959 to a landless farmer’s family in a small village called Appanaickenpatti Pudur, near Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.[3] His father was a farmer and his mother was a housewife, who took up rearing buffaloes and selling their milk to sustain the family’s living.[4] Velumani completed his education at Sri Venkateswara High School, Appanaickenpatti Pudur. He went to obtain his B.Sc. Degree from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, affiliated to University of Madras in the year 1978 at the age of 19. He stayed in a government run hostel for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), away from his village to complete his graduation.[3] He earned a Master’s degree in 1985 and later a doctor’s degree in Thyroid Biochemistry in 1995 from University of Mumbai while working with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), one of India’s finest nuclear research facility based in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
After graduating in 1978, he began with a job in 1979 at Gemini Capsules, a small pharmaceutical company in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu as a shift chemist. After three years, the company was shut down. He then applied for a job at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) for the post of laboratory assistant where he continued working for 14 years. During the same time, he also pursued his Master’s and Doctor’s degree and was rose to the rank of scientist. He later was posted at the Radiation Medicine Centre (RMC), a BARC department at Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Dr.A.Velumani decided to set up his own thyroid testing laboratory, Thyrocare, in 1996. He improved the business model by introducing a franchisee model in his diagnostic laboratory and offered testing at very affordable rates. Velumani, believing in focus, volume and logistics, has grown Thyrocare from testing for thyroid disorders to preventive medical checkups, and other diagnostic blood tests.
Under his leadership from past 20 years, Thyrocare has become a well-known and largest thyroid testing laboratory having a network of more than 1000 outlets across India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Middle East.[5] In April 2016, Thyrocare also witnessed a remarkable response in its Initial Public Offer (IPO) release with an over-subscription of 72.86 times and is claimed to be the second best show for an IPO since 2008.
Dr.A.Velumani also stays to be the founder and managing director of Nueclear Healthcare Ltd. (NHL) a radiology diagnostics company with its main branch at Navi Mumbai, Maharashtr. A.Velumani along with Thyrocare has initiated this project to offer cancer related imaging services half to what the industry offers.
He calls the company “McDonald’s plus Walmart” — McDonald’s for its focused menu and Walmart for its volumes.
